Upstream Wells & Projects Development

Upstream Wells & Projects Development

Using our proprietary Project Development Process (PDP®) and Project Development Standards (PDS®), NAPTA develops, delivers and operates Upstream Mega Projects with its well proven decision based methodology deployed at every stage in the project life cycle.

Historically speaking, the principle of this methodology has been initially discovered by the research institutes in the United States, and then further developed by academia mainly in Stanford University – as the main contributor – and consultancies such as Strategic Decisions Group in Houston, Texas. In the practice and real world, it has been demonstrated and deployed widely by the international oil companies such as Chevron in the Upstream Oil and Gas projects worldwide.

System Engineering

System Engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management that focuses on how to design and manage complex systems over their life cycles. At its core, System Engineering utilizes systems thinking principles to organize this body of knowledge. Issues such as requirements engineering, reliability, logistics, coordination of different teams, testing and evaluation, maintainability and many other disciplines necessary for successful system development, design, implementation, commissioning and start-up and ultimate decommission become more difficult when dealing with large or complex projects. System Engineering deals with work-processes, optimization methods, and risk management tools in such projects. It overlaps technical and human-centered disciplines such as Process Engineering, Discipline Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Management and Project Management. System Engineering ensures that all likely aspects of a project or system are considered, and integrated into a whole.

Modularisation

Modularization is essentially a strategy for transferring man-hours from the construction site to one or several fabrication yards. Through this service, potential benefits can be achieved for ‘Costs’, ‘Schedule’ and ‘HSE’ or combination of all three.

Constructability & Construction Management

Constructability entails the process of developing and determining the most optimum construction methodologies to be applied for a project in consideration of the projects’ technical characteristics and possible design options, affected by environmental conditions such as site location(s), economic and political circumstances (location factors), cost and schedule and quality requirements.

Petroleum Economics

NAPTA in conjunction with its international business partners has extensive experience in building petroleum economics models and performing analysis for a worldwide range of petroleum fiscal systems, using the Discounted Cashflow Method (DCM). These models take petroleum field data for cost and production, and global data as oil and gas prices and inflation into account and return cashflow and economics performance indicators in line with the customer requirements. Graphics for presentation of cashflow features and specified sensitivities. Using these models, NAPTA may carry out all the necessary analysis as required for evaluation of petroleum assets, bid and negotiation analysis, and project investment analysis. Any analysis takes account of exploration and appraisal risk as applicable for the specific asset.

Bid Analysis

Economics services may be specifically applied to bid analysis with full quantitative analysis from Government and Oil Company’s perspective. This includes the impact of bid price (signature bonus) on economic return to the government and/or the oil company, in terms of customer specified indicators (e.g. Net Present Value, Earning power/Internal Rate of Return, Value to Investment Ratio). Under Risk Service Contracts, such as existing contracts, the annual fees to the oil company can be established to provide the required rate of return. For Greenfield assets, this will take exploration risk into account.

Negotiation Support

NAPTA’s negotiation support covers a range of proprietary analysis; the process is set by the dynamics of the negotiation process. Negotiation support may include a perception analysis of the commercial position of the opposite party – this needs development of a set of assumptions together with the customer. The bid process, progresses by parties, will be analysed on their impact on economic results; the process of bid development and conditioning will be analysed and options for moves required to close the negotiation gap will be generated. Bids by various parties will be ranked as part of the process.

Upstream Wells & Projects Delivery

Upstream Wells & Projects Delivery

As specified in the NAPTA’s PDS® and after framing an upstream opportunity in the FEL1 and FEL2 Phases, several key Front End Technical Documents will be developed as per NAPTA’s Project Development Process (PDP®). These documents are, but not limited to, Project Initiation Document (PID), Feasibility Report (FR), Concept Selection Report (CSR) and Field Development Plan (FDP). Application of this proprietary process is mandatory and provides for standardised Governance, Assurance and Delivery process for capital projects undertaken by NAPTA Corporation where NAPTA’s PDS® adopted for the Wells and Projects Development and Delivery.

Contracting and procurement

Contracting and Procurement (C&P) Strategy is a critically important element of Front End Development. To support optimum replication and standardisation and across the entire Capital Projects, the C&P Strategy development process has been moved to earlier stages, pre-FEL2 Phase, in the NAPTA’s PDP®. With this shift in the C&P activities alongside the project life cycle and by using a rigid structure, it helps achieve earlier convergence between Upstream Wells & Projects Development, Delivery and C&P community by leveraging standard technical and supply chain solutions. The NAPTA’s C&P Strategy supports optimised delivery of fit-for-purpose facilities that meet business requirements through:-

Commissioning & Start-Up

A key component of Upstream Wells & Projects improvement journey is the safe and efficient planning and execution of Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) activities, including the process of handing over the completed assets to the operator with the assurance of technical integrity and successful first year production. This phase of the project delivery process is particularly critical, because it introduces the additional risks of “Live” hydrocarbons and the additional complexity of multiple execution parties and the transfer of responsibilities. NAPTA’s PDS® equipped to define a standardised work process for CSU planning and execution and the Project-to-Asset (P2A) transfer phase, to enable project teams to continually improve their delivery performance.

Cost Estimating

Experience has frequently shown that poorly assembled cost estimates result in misunderstandings and omissions leading to considerably higher or lower estimates than subsequently proven actual costs. A ‘too high’ estimate can result in unnecessary project cancellation and lost opportunity or wasted time and resources. Conversely, investment in a sub-economic project can result if an estimate is ‘too low’.
